Consider what the cicada is actually doing down there. For thirteen or seventeen years it lives in darkness, drinking dilute sap from a root, growing by almost imperceptible degrees — and counting. Not metaphorically. The leading evidence says it tracks the host tree's annual pulse, registering each spring as the tree's fluids shift, summing the seasons until a precise prime total is reached. A brain smaller than a grain of rice, keeping a tally across two decades with no calendar and no light.
And the primality is not decoration. Model the system and it falls out as optimal: a cycle length sharing no small factors with predator and competitor rhythms minimizes catastrophic overlap. The cicada is, in effect, solving a problem in number theory with its life cycle — choosing the interval least divisible by the threats around it. Then it stacks a second solution on top: synchronous mass emergence, so many bodies surfacing at once that no predator can make a dent. Two distinct survival strategies — one temporal, one numerical — and both depend entirely on the waiting being complete.
But don't mistake the elegance for closure. We do not actually know, at the molecular level, how the cicada counts — what the clock is made of, where the tally is kept, how a year is registered and stored across seventeen of them. We don't fully know why evolution landed on these primes and not others; the leading models point to the ice ages and the need to stay synchronized in cold, unreliable summers, but the precise history is reconstructed, not witnessed. And the "stragglers" — cicadas that emerge four years off-schedule, sometimes in large enough numbers to seem like a brood trying to shift its entire cycle — hint at machinery we have only begun to read. We can describe the arithmetic beautifully and still not hold the clock in our hands. We can say what the waiting is for without knowing how the creature counts its way through it — which is a strangely fitting thing to be left holding, at the end of a story about patience: not the answer, but a longer wait for it.
Ecclesiastes says God "has made everything beautiful for its own time" and in the same breath admits the catch: He has "planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end." That is precisely the cicada's condition, and ours. The creature cannot see why year nine matters; it simply keeps the count. We are handed a life whose shape we can't see from inside it, asked to keep faith with seasons whose purpose won't resolve until later — sometimes much later. The cicada is not wasting sixteen years. It is being made ready, in the dark, by a clock it did not set and cannot read.
Most of us carry some long underground season — a stretch that has felt like dormancy, like nothing taking root, like time quietly lost. The cicada offers a different reading: that the hidden years are not the absence of the work but the form of it, and that emergence, when it comes, comes all at once. You are not required to see the whole scope from beginning to end. You are only asked to keep the count, and to trust that the One who has made everything beautiful for its own time has not lost track of yours.
