In December 1995, the director of the Hubble Space Telescope did something his colleagues thought reckless: he aimed humanity's finest telescope at a patch of sky near the Big Dipper that contained, as far as anyone could tell, nothing — a black scrap about the width of a grain of sand held at arm's length — and held it there for ten days. Critics called it a squandering of irreplaceable observing time. The resulting image, the Hubble Deep Field, held roughly three thousand galaxies in that "empty" speck. The Ultra Deep Field, a decade later, went deeper and found around ten thousand. Then in 2022 the James Webb Space Telescope, working in infrared, resolved its first deep field in a fraction of the time and reached further still — to galaxies whose light has traveled more than thirteen billion years, formed only a few hundred million years after the universe began. The dark was never empty. It had been full the entire time; we simply lacked the instrument to see it.
And then the frontier does what frontiers do. Webb didn't merely confirm the picture — it cracked it. It keeps turning up galaxies in the infant universe that appear too massive, too luminous, too mature to have assembled that fast under our best models of how galaxies form. The data are solid and the papers are out, and at the moment there is no settled explanation: perhaps the first stars formed far more efficiently than we assumed, perhaps something is wrong in our accounting of dark matter or the universe's expansion rate, perhaps it is physics we do not yet possess. And underneath that, a larger blank: we still cannot say what roughly ninety-five percent of the universe even is — the "dark matter" and "dark energy" that overwhelmingly dominate it remain unidentified. We built the most powerful eye in human history, aimed it at the deepest dark, and it handed back not a tidy answer but a fresh set of questions larger than the ones we brought. Point the sharpest eye we own at the emptiest dark, and it still comes back full — of galaxies, and of riddles we did not know to ask.
This is not a defect in the science; it is the signature of the thing being studied. And Scripture claims that same signature runs all the way up: "Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness." Not no one has measured it yet — no one can. The Hebrew poets had no telescope, but they had the intuition the deep field makes unavoidable: that you are dealing with something whose depth is not a quantity you will eventually exhaust, but a property of what it is. "From everlasting to everlasting," one of them writes, "you are God." The universe's refusal to bottom out under our sharpest instruments is not evidence against such a God. It is exactly the fingerprint you would expect Him to leave.
There is a quiet despair in assuming you have already seen the bottom — of your faith, your marriage, your own tired heart, the dark patch in your life where nothing seems to be. We are an impatient, over-lit species; we glance, conclude empty, and look away. But the deep field was a ten-day exposure. It surrendered its thousands of galaxies only to an instrument willing to hold still and keep gathering light from what looked like nothing at all. The God who is actually there is not measurable, not exhaustible, and not finished — and the places in your life that read as empty dark may be precisely where, if you can bear to keep looking, the most turns out to have been there the whole time.
