Inside essentially every cell you own, embedded in the folded membranes of your mitochondria, spins a machine that would be the envy of any engineer: ATP synthase. It is a true rotary motor — rotor, stator, drive shaft — among the smallest known to exist, and it runs not on a current of electrons but on a current of protons. Your cells use the energy from food to pump protons across a membrane, building a gradient, a kind of charged waterfall; the protons then flow back through the motor's channel, and that flow spins the rotor at something like a hundred revolutions per second. With each rotation, the motor's catalytic head cycles through a series of shape changes that clamp ADP and phosphate together into ATP — the universal energy currency behind your every heartbeat, thought, and breath. Tally it up and your body builds and spends roughly its own weight in ATP per day. The same machine, driven the same way, turns in your cells, in an oak, and in bacteria three billion years old. It is very likely the most widely shared piece of machinery in the history of life — and it has been running in you, unbidden and unceasing, since before you drew breath.
We can describe the motor in breathtaking detail — its structure, its rotation, its near-perfect efficiency — and yet the deepest question slips through our fingers: where did it come from? Generating energy by pumping ions across a membrane (chemiosmosis) is so fundamental and so universal that it almost certainly predates the last common ancestor of all living things; life appears to have been doing this from very near its start. But how a rotary protein motor and the proton gradient it feeds on arose together — each fairly useless without the other — has no accepted answer. The leading ideas trace it to natural proton gradients in the rock of deep-sea hydrothermal vents, but the origin of biological energy remains one of the hard, open problems in science. We hold in our hands a machine we can film spinning and still cannot explain the birth of — its mechanism mapped almost down to the atom, its origin barely a sketch. The most universally shared engine in all of life, and we cannot yet tell the story of its first turn.
Stand inside that for a moment. The thing most responsible for the fact that you are alive and reading this is not your willpower, your competence, or your vigilance. It is a sustaining process you did not start, cannot feel, and could not pause if your life depended on it — which it does. When Paul stood in Athens he reached for the largest possible frame: "For in him we live and move and exist." He meant it as theology; the cell biology turns out to rhyme with it exactly. Your living, your moving, your sheer continued existence are, at every instant, being held up from underneath. This is what Scripture means by God's faithfulness — not chiefly a warm sentiment, but the relentless, moment-by-moment upholding of a creation that would otherwise simply stop. He sustains everything by the word of His power, down to the turning of a motor you will never see.
Most adult exhaustion is the labor of self-sustaining — the grinding conviction that existence is a thing you must personally keep aloft by effort, that to stop striving is to fall. But you are, at this second, being kept alive by motors in every cell spinning entirely without you, and you contributed nothing to a single revolution. The most fundamental fact about you is not that you are holding on, but that you are being held. The invitation underneath all of it is almost embarrassingly simple, and almost impossible for the competent to accept: you can stop bracing. The One in whom you live and move and exist is not tired, has not looked away, and is not — even for the length of a single heartbeat — going to stop turning the engine.
