Of all the machinery in the cell, the ribosome may be the most fundamental — the maker of all the other makers, since nearly every machine in biology is a protein, and proteins are built by the ribosome. It is ancient beyond easy imagining, universal across all life, and we have now mapped it in stunning atomic detail. You might assume that means we understand it. We do not, not fully.
The map is breathtaking — the 2009 Nobel-winning structures show us where the thousands of atoms sit. But a map of where the parts are is not the same as understanding how the machine runs. Exactly how the ribosome achieves its combination of speed and fidelity — how it can add amino acids ten to twenty times a second while almost never choosing the wrong one — is still being worked out, along with how it is regulated and the full choreography of its many moving parts in real time. And then there is the question that sits at the bottom of the whole field and refuses to close: how could such a machine ever have originated? This is not a god-of-the-gaps embarrassment; it is a recognized, profound open problem in origin-of-life research, and the shape of it is exact and beautiful. The ribosome is needed to build proteins — yet the ribosome is itself built partly of proteins, and partly of RNA. You need the machine to make the parts, but you need the parts to make the machine. A maker that must itself be made. Decades of brilliant work have circled this chicken-and-egg, and the plain truth is that we do not know how the first one came to be. A machine that builds the very parts it is itself built from is not a riddle we are near to solving; it is a knot tied at the origin of life.
And here, with great care, is the parallel worth naming — an analogy that points, not a proof that closes. John writes: "the Word became human and made his home among us... and we have seen his glory." At the heart of the Christian faith is the most staggering claim language can hold: that the eternal Word, the One through whom everything was made, became flesh — took on actual physical substance, a body that could be weighed and touched and wounded. The ribosome, ancient and universal in every living thing, does a faint, creaturely echo of exactly this motion every second: it takes the word — pure coded information — and makes it flesh, real protein, the substance of a body. It does not explain the Incarnation; nothing could. But the deepest mystery of the gospel — Word becoming flesh — turns out to be written, in miniature, into the most fundamental machine of the very bodies the Word came to share. The pattern at the bottom of biology rhymes with the pattern at the bottom of grace.
There is a particular ache in adult faith: the suspicion that "the Word became flesh" is a beautiful sentence but a thin one — too abstract to lean your weight on after a hard year. The machine in your cells offers a strange consolation. Word-becoming-flesh is not a foreign idea bolted onto the world from outside; it is the very thing happening in every cell of you, billions of times a moment, the way your body has always been made — information taking on substance, the message becoming real. So when John says the Word became human and made His home among us, He is describing, at the scale of the whole world, the motion your own flesh is built by. The God who became flesh was not slumming in a foreign country. He was entering the kind of reality He had already woven, all the way down, into word-made-flesh. And He came "full of unfailing love and faithfulness" — not merely to be admired in atomic detail, but to make His home with you. The maker of the makers, who could not be explained, chose to be known.
