That mitochondria descend from once-free-living bacteria is now widely accepted — the genetic evidence is strong, the story elegant. It can feel like settled history. But the event itself, and what it required, remains one of the deepest and least understood transitions in the history of life, and the questions around it are genuinely open.
The merger that produced complex cells (the kind that make up animals, plants, fungi — everything you can see) appears, as far as we can tell, to have happened essentially once in roughly four billion years of life. Simple cells arose and flourished for over a billion years; this particular leap — one cell taking another permanently inside and forging a true partnership — seems to be a singular, staggeringly improbable event, never clearly repeated at this level. Why it happened, how the two cells overcame the enormous obstacles to such intimate cooperation, what exactly the host cell was, and why complex life apparently waited so long and then arose just this once — these are matters of vigorous, unresolved scientific debate. Some argue the difficulty of this step is so extreme that it may be the great bottleneck that makes complex life rare in the universe. We are, in other words, the descendants of an event we cannot fully explain and have never seen happen again — an ancient, almost unrepeatable act of one life being welcomed wholly into another and the two becoming one thing. Every breath you draw is powered by the heirs of that one merger, and it has not, so far as we can tell, ever happened again.
"It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me." Paul is describing the most intimate union the gospel offers — so complete that he can barely locate the boundary between himself and the Christ who indwells him. We tend to file that as mystical exaggeration. But the mitochondria suggest that such union-without-erasure is not only conceivable but foundational: the very cells writing this sentence exist because, once, a separate life was taken so deeply inside another that the two became a single living thing — and the host was not destroyed but immeasurably enlarged. That is the grammar of Galatians 2:20. Christ within does not annihilate the self ("I live in this earthly body," Paul goes on); He joins it so closely, so transformingly, that the old boundary of what you could be on your own simply dissolves into something greater. The deepest union is not absorption. It is two becoming one, with the lesser made vastly more.
By midlife, many of us have built a self defined largely by its separateness — our competence, our independence, the boundaries we maintain to stay safe and in control. And underneath, often, runs a loneliness that this very separateness creates: the sense of being sealed inside our own skin, finally alone with ourselves. Galatians 2:20 names a different and harder-won way of being a self — not the sovereign, self-contained individual, but a life so joined to Christ that "I" and "He" blur at the edges, the self not erased but indwelt and enlarged. The mitochondria whisper that this is not a violation of how life works but its deepest pattern: that the richest existence comes not from sealing yourself off but from being entered, joined, and remade by another. You were quite literally made by such a union, billions of years deep in your cells. And the union you were made for is the one Paul names — Christ living in you, the boundary of your small, guarded self dissolving at last into a life immeasurably larger, loved by the Son of God who gave himself for you.
