Neutrinos are a triumph of modern physics — predicted in 1930 before anyone could detect one, finally caught in 1956, now used to image the Sun's core and watch supernovae. We have a whole field of neutrino astronomy. It can feel like a closed chapter. But neutrinos sit at the center of some of the deepest unsolved questions in all of science.
We still do not know the actual mass of a neutrino. We know it isn't quite zero — the discovery that neutrinos "oscillate," changing type as they travel, proved they must have some tiny mass, and earned the 2015 Nobel Prize — but the precise value remains unmeasured, one of the most pursued unknown numbers in physics. We don't fully know why their masses are so absurdly small compared to every other particle. We don't yet know whether a neutrino is its own antiparticle — experiments hunting for a process called neutrinoless double beta decay are running right now to find out. And here is the part that lifts the hair on your neck: many physicists believe neutrinos may hold the answer to why there is anything at all. The Big Bang should have made matter and antimatter in equal amounts, which would have annihilated completely, leaving an empty universe. Something tipped the balance toward matter — and the leading candidate for that something involves the strange behavior of neutrinos in the early universe. The ghostliest, most overlooked particle, the one that slips through everything unnoticed, may be the reason the cosmos isn't empty — the reason you exist. And we are still, actively, trying to find out — chasing it into detectors sunk a mile underground, waiting for the few faint flashes that might finally fix a number the rest of physics has been unable to name.
"Even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you." The psalmist reaches for the most total concealment he can imagine — wrapping himself in darkness — and confesses it does nothing; to God the dark is not dark. Neutrinos are a faint physical parable of that all-penetrating sight. They pour out of the most hidden place in our sky, the Sun's core, which no light can escape; they pass through the solid Earth as though it were glass; no darkness, no density, no shielding is opaque to them. And they may be why creation exists. It is fitting that the God whose presence "passes through" all concealment would build into the foundations of matter a messenger that does the same — and would, perhaps, hang the existence of everything on the most humble, least graspable thing in it.
There is a loneliness that can deepen with age: the sense of an interior darkness no one sees into — the private grief, the secret failure, the part of yourself you've kept unlit because you fear what its exposure would cost. We imagine that darkness as a place even God doesn't reach, and we are half-afraid of being found there and half-afraid of never being found at all. The psalm speaks directly to both fears, and the neutrino quietly underwrites it. To the One who made the all-penetrating particle, your night already shines as bright as day; there is no shielding you could build that His presence has not already passed through. And — this is the gospel hidden in it — being seen all the way to the bottom is not your ruin but your rescue, because the One who sees into your darkness is the same One who tipped the balance toward existence, toward matter, toward you. You are not hidden from Him. You never were. And His seeing you is the most loving thing that has ever passed through you.
