We tend to think we know where Earth's water is: the oceans, the ice caps, the rivers and lakes, the vapor in the sky. The surface water cycle is well understood — evaporation, clouds, rain, runoff, return. It feels like a complete accounting. And then, fairly recently, that tidy accounting sprang a leak. We found we may have badly underestimated how much water this planet actually holds — because much of it could be hidden somewhere we can never visit.
There appears to be another water cycle — a deep one — operating far below the surface, over timescales of millions of years, and we are only beginning to understand it. The startling clue came in 2014, when scientists studied a tiny, battered diamond carried up from deep inside the Earth. Trapped within it was a speck of a mineral called ringwoodite, a form that exists only under the crushing pressures of the mantle transition zone roughly 400 to 660 kilometers down — and remarkably, that ringwoodite contained water, chemically bound into its crystal structure. The implication is staggering: if water is locked into mantle rock at that depth across the planet, there could be as much water hidden inside the Earth as in all the surface oceans combined — possibly several oceans' worth, sealed in stone beneath our feet. But how much is genuinely uncertain. Estimates vary widely, the samples are vanishingly rare, and the deep mantle is fundamentally beyond our reach. How this deep water cycles — drawn down by sinking tectonic plates, released back toward the surface through volcanoes over geologic ages — is actively, openly debated. We lifted a single flawed diamond out of the deep Earth and discovered that the reservoir of the world's water is far larger, and far less mapped, than we knew — perhaps an ocean's worth, or several, locked in stone deeper than any drill will ever reach.
"The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth... It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit." Isaiah takes the most ordinary, reliable thing — water falling and doing its faithful work — and uses it as the very measure of God's reliability: His word goes out and does not return empty. It is a promise built on the water cycle's faithfulness. And there is something fitting in learning, in our own time, that the supply behind that promise is even deeper than we imagined — that beneath the visible cycle we thought we'd mapped lies an ocean we cannot see, larger than all the seas, held in the dark heart of the world we were given. That hidden ocean doesn't shrink the promise. It enlarges it. There is more to the Sustainer's provision than we knew, and likely more still than we have found.
There comes a season in adult life when you become aware of the bottom — of finite reserves, of energy and time and resilience that won't replenish the way they once did, of a sense that you are working from a supply that is being spent and not refilled. It can make a person frugal with themselves, and quietly afraid. The deep water of the Earth speaks against that fear from an unexpected direction. We were sure we had measured the world's water, and then discovered there was an ocean beneath the ocean, hidden in the rock, far past anything we could reach or count. The God who provides is like that: His resources are not the visible surface we anxiously tally, but a store that runs deeper than our anxious tallying can reach. Isaiah's promise holds — His word, His provision, goes out and does not return empty, and never has. You are not drawing down the last of a shrinking reserve. You are sustained the way the deep Earth holds its hidden water — out of a fullness far past what you have managed to measure.
