That planarians regenerate is well documented and rightly famous. But the deepest question their regeneration poses is one science has only recently begun to take seriously, and it is genuinely open: when a fragment rebuilds a whole worm, how does it know what to build, and where? How does a slice of tissue "know" it needs a head at this end and a tail at that one, and the right organs in between?
The genetic code alone doesn't obviously answer this — every cell carries the same genes, yet the fragment must somehow read its position and reconstruct the correct overall shape, the right anatomy in the right arrangement. A growing body of research, much of it associated with the work of Michael Levin and others, points to something remarkable: that the blueprint guiding regeneration is stored, at least in part, in bioelectric signals — patterns of voltage across the worm's cells that act like a kind of map of the body's target shape, telling cells where they are and what to make. In striking experiments, researchers have altered these electrical patterns and caused planarian fragments to regrow two heads, or even a head shaped like that of a different species — without changing the genes at all, just by changing the electrical "instructions." This suggests a whole layer of biological information beyond DNA, one we are only beginning to read and barely beginning to understand. How shape and pattern are stored, maintained, and rebuilt — what some call the "morphogenetic code" — is a real and active frontier, with implications for healing, birth defects, and regenerative medicine that we can only glimpse. The humble flatworm holds a secret about how living form is remembered and restored, and we have only started to decode it. A creature you could balance on a fingertip is quietly solving a problem — how a body knows its own shape — that we have only lately learned how to ask.
Paul writes that in Christ "we also may live new lives" — and the whole logic of his gospel is resurrection: not improvement, not mere repair, but death followed by genuine new life, raised "by the glorious power of the Father." The planarian gives that an extraordinary resonance. Here is a creature that can be cut to pieces and yet holds, in some hidden layer beneath even its genes, a complete blueprint of its whole self — so that from a fragment, the entire form can be remembered and rebuilt. We are not flatworms, and the analogy is not mechanism. But the picture is luminous: that the pattern of a whole life can be held safe, intact, beyond the reach of the cutting — and from it, the whole can be raised again. The Father who raised Christ holds the blueprint of who you are meant to be, and it is not destroyed by what destroys the body.
In the latter half of life, you accumulate losses that feel like amputations — of capacities, relationships, hopes, versions of yourself you can't get back — and beneath the grief runs a deeper dread: that enough can be cut away that you would simply cease to be you, that the self does not survive its losses. The planarian cannot prove otherwise about a human soul; that is the territory of faith, not biology. But it is a startling rumor planted in creation: that the pattern of a whole self can be held in a place the cutting cannot reach, and that from what remains, the whole can be restored. Paul says exactly this, with confidence biology cannot supply — that the blueprint of who you are is held by the Father, safe even through death, and that resurrection means not a stranger assembled in your place but you, raised to new life. What has been cut from you is real, and your grief is honest. But the pattern of you is held somewhere deeper than the wound, by One who has already proven, in Christ, that He can raise the whole from what death leaves behind.
