God Tidies Up While You Sleep
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.
Psalm 4:8 (NLT)
When you go to sleep at night, it might feel like nothing happens — you close your eyes, and then it's morning. But something wonderful is happening the whole time you sleep.
While you're resting, your body is busy taking care of you. It heals little scrapes, it grows, and — here's the amazing part — your brain gives itself a kind of gentle wash, clearing away the leftover bits from a long day of thinking and playing. It's a little like how a room gets tidied up while you're away, so it's fresh and ready when you come back. That's why, after a good night's sleep, you wake up feeling clear and new and ready for the day. The tidying-up happened while you were dreaming.
You don't have to do anything to get cleaned up and renewed at night — it happens while you sleep, all on its own, the way God designed it. That's a picture of how God loves to take care of you: doing good things for you even when you're resting and not working at all.
You can lie down and sleep in peace, because God keeps you safe and renews you while you rest. The most refreshing thing that happens to you each day is a gift you don't have to earn — you just receive it, sleeping.
Prayer
Thank You, God, that even while I sleep, You are taking care of me and making me new for a fresh day. I don't have to do anything — I can lie down in peace because You keep me safe. Thank You for the gift of rest. Your care is endless. Amen.
