For most of history the Sun was a closed book. You could feel its power, chart its path, even time your harvests by it — but its interior was permanently hidden behind a wall of blinding plasma. We seemed fated to know the Sun only from the outside.
Two windows opened, and both lead into mystery. The first: neutrinos. Fusion in the core releases ghostly particles that fly straight out through the entire body of the Sun and reach us in eight minutes — they let us literally "see" the core in real time. But when we first counted them, only about a third as many arrived as the theory demanded. The "solar neutrino problem" stood unsolved for over thirty years, until experiments at Super-Kamiokande and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory showed, around 2001–2002, that neutrinos change identity in flight — proof, recognized with the 2015 Nobel Prize, that these particles have mass at all. We were forced to revise our physics, and the Sun was the messenger. The second window is harder. The Sun's visible surface is about 5,500°C — but its outer atmosphere, the corona, is one to three million degrees. Heat is flowing, impossibly, from the cooler surface out to the far hotter crown, as if a room got warmer the farther you walked from the fireplace. This "coronal heating problem" remains unsolved. NASA's Parker Solar Probe is right now flying through the corona itself, closer to the Sun than anything we have ever sent, to find the answer — and it is still being worked out. The star we orbit, the one thing in the sky we thought we understood, is still keeping secrets.
Malachi calls the coming Christ "the Sun of Righteousness," rising "with healing in his wings." It is a staggering image precisely because of what we now know the Sun to be: not a lamp, but an inexhaustible engine of power whose depths we still cannot fully read. Scripture reaches for the most overwhelming thing in the human sky to gesture at Him — and even that falls short, because the Sun will one day burn out, and He will not. Every instrument we have aimed at the Sun has sent back more mystery than it resolved — a neutrino count that forced us to rewrite particle physics, a crown of gas that burns hundreds of times hotter than the surface beneath it. That is exactly what the prophet is pointing past: a brightness that doesn't diminish on inspection, but deepens.
There is something steadying in a Sun we cannot fully explain. We are tempted, as adults, to believe that whatever we've examined closely we've therefore exhausted — that familiarity equals comprehension. But the most familiar object in the sky, the one we've watched every day of our lives, still hides a heat we can't account for. If we have not yet reached the end of the Sun's secrets, we have certainly not reached the end of the One it was named to point toward — the Sun of Righteousness who rose with healing, set on a Friday, and was not, in the end, kept down.
