We had, by the late twentieth century, a confident catalogue of the sky's lights. The aurora was understood: solar wind, magnetic funneling, atomic emission, colors sorted by altitude. The textbook felt closed. Then amateurs with good cameras started photographing something that wasn't in it.
For years, aurora chasers in Canada had been seeing a thin ribbon of mauve and white light, arcing east–west, often with a green "picket fence" structure beneath it — and it didn't behave like an aurora. They affectionately nicknamed it "Steve." When scientists finally turned serious instruments on it, around 2016–2018, the name was kept and dressed up as an acronym: STEVE, for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. And the findings were humbling. STEVE is not a normal aurora — it isn't primarily caused by particles raining down and exciting the air the way the green curtains are. It appears to be the glow of a river of plasma flowing through the upper atmosphere at thousands of degrees and enormous speed, by a mechanism researchers are still working out. A phenomenon bright enough to photograph, visible from populated regions, present over our heads through the entire history of science — and we only began to recognize it as its own thing within the last decade, discovered largely by ordinary people looking up. The sky was holding a color we hadn't catalogued.
When Ezekiel strains to describe the glory of God, language buckles. He reaches for storm and fire and "gleaming amber," and hedges every noun with something like, the appearance of, what looked like — a man pointing at a brightness his vocabulary cannot hold. We sometimes read that as primitive, as if a modern observer would simply name what he saw. But STEVE is a quiet rebuke to that confidence. Here we are, with spectrometers and satellites, and the sky still showed us a light we had no category for, no name for, until citizens insisted it was real. The Artist's palette is not closed. Millennia into watching the sky, and only a decade ago it still handed us a color our instruments had no name for — from a Maker whose glory outran the vocabulary of even His prophets.
There's a particular flatness that can settle over a long life: the sense that you've seen the range of things now, that the world holds no more genuinely new colors. STEVE says otherwise — and it was found not by the credentialed but by people in the habit of going outside and looking up. The wonder isn't reserved for experts; it's reserved for the attentive. Somewhere over your own head, tonight, the Artist may be running a color you've never seen and science hasn't finished naming. The question is only whether you've kept the habit of looking.
