"I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles." The psalmist resolves to meditate — to fix his attention on the works of God and turn them over slowly. The diatom rewards exactly that. Here is a wonder that does not exhaust itself on first glance; the finest minds have studied it for generations and still cannot say how it does what it does. And the splendor is doubly remarkable: it is lavished on the unseen and it is crafted with a precision we can barely begin to imitate. The same God who hides trillions of these jewels in water no one samples also engineered each one with a molecular artistry our laboratories chase and cannot match. Majestic, glorious splendor — meditated on by the Maker, mostly, and offered to us in the rare glimpses a microscope allows.
There is a quiet erosion that comes with a long, accomplished life: the sense that the world has been largely figured out, that wonder is a thing of youth, that the splendor has been catalogued and filed. The diatom is a standing rebuke to that fatigue. To meditate on God's majestic splendor is to let a diatom — a thing finer than human art, hidden where only He attends to it — pull you out of the weary assumption that you've seen the range of things. You have seen a sliver. The Artist is still working, gloriously, mostly unwatched, in the smallest and most hidden places — and inviting you to ponder splendor that He has been beholding all along.

God, in every drop of water single cells are building flawless glass jewels with a precision our finest laboratories chase and cannot match — and almost none of it will ever be seen by anyone but You. Forgive me for the weary assumption that the world is figured out, that wonder is used up, that I've seen the range of things. I have seen a sliver. Teach me to meditate on Your majestic, glorious splendor, hidden in the smallest places, beheld by You all along. Your beauty is endless. Amen.
