Isaac Newton, splitting light with prisms, gave us the clean account of the rainbow: rays entering drops, bending by color, exiting at 42 degrees. It's correct, it's beautiful, and for a long time it seemed to be the whole story. The rainbow felt like one of the few things in nature fully and finally explained. But look closely at a bright rainbow — really closely — and you'll sometimes see something the clean account cannot produce.
Just inside the violet edge of a vivid primary bow, you can occasionally see faint, delicate extra arcs — pale green and pink and purple fringes, repeating, like an echo of the bow pressed up beneath it. These are called supernumerary bows, and they were a genuine scientific embarrassment. Newton's ray theory — light as straight rays bouncing through drops — flatly cannot explain them. It predicts one bow, full stop. The supernumeraries simply should not be there. They turned out to be a fingerprint of something deeper: light is not really rays at all, but waves, and these faint bands are an interference pattern, the crests and troughs of light waves that traveled slightly different paths through the drop reinforcing and cancelling each other. To explain the quiet fringes beneath the rainbow, physics had to abandon the simple picture and embrace the wave nature of light — and even today, the full, exact theory of the rainbow draws on sophisticated wave optics, with subtle features that reward ever-closer mathematical study. The most "explained" sight in the sky was hiding a depth that forced a revolution in how we understand light itself. The plainest arc in the world kept its deepest secret in the faintest bands beneath it.
Scripture opens with a rainbow over a drowned world — God's covenant promise — and it closes with one too. John, caught up into the throne room of heaven, sees a rainbow encircling the throne of God. The bow that began as a promise to a fragile, frightened remnant after the flood reappears at the very center of glory, wrapped around the throne of the One making all things new. And there is something fitting in the science underneath. The rainbow looked simple and turned out to be inexhaustibly deep — a sign whose beauty kept opening into further beauty the harder anyone looked. That is exactly how God's covenant works across the whole story: what begins as a single, almost humble promise in the clouds is revealed, in the end, to encircle the throne of heaven. The sign was always deeper than it first appeared.
Much of long faith is the temptation to feel you've now seen to the bottom of God's promises — that grace, forgiveness, the covenant, are familiar doctrines you fully grasped years ago and have since exhausted. The supernumerary bows are a quiet rebuke. The most studied, most "finished" beauty in the sky still had faint, astonishing depths waiting just beneath the obvious arc, visible only to those who kept looking closely. God's covenant is like that. The promise you think you've understood — that He keeps faith, that He is making all things new — has bands of depth beneath it you have not yet seen, and the same bow that comforted you in your first storm turns out to be the one wrapped around the throne. Keep looking. There is more beneath the bow.
